The Journey Begins: Continental Stopover in Madrid

by Diosnel Herrnsdorf

As noted in the introduction to this journal, we recently had the privilege of embarking on a memorable pilgrimage to the Holy Land following a rich and fast-paced itinerary.

Our group gathered at Silvio Pettirossi International Airport on Saturday, February 25, at 5:00 PM to check in for Air Europa flight UX024 bound for Madrid. After a smooth yet long transatlantic flight, we touched down in Spain’s capital shortly before noon on Sunday, February 26.

From 40°C Heat to Crisp Spanish Air

We were greeted by a stark climate contrast compared to Asunción: stepping off the plane from near 40 °C summer heat into a crisp 10 °C morning. A private transfer brought us to our hotel, an elegant building along the iconic Gran Vía, within walking distance of the city’s key landmarks.

“Madrid welcomes travelers with an invigorating chill immediately softened by the warmth of its vibrant streets and grandeur.”

Following a brief rest, we set out on a unique walking tour led by a costumed guide depicting King Charles III—famously remembered as “Madrid’s best mayor” for his transformative urban legacy during the 18th century.

Urban Landmarks and Familiar Encounters

Our route took us past some of the city’s most cherished sites:

  • Puerta del Sol: dominated by the equestrian statue of King Charles III.
  • Puerta de Alcalá & Las Ventas Bullring: architectural landmarks rich in capital history.
  • Santiago Bernabéu Stadium: a world-famous stop along Paseo de la Castellana.
  • The Bear and the Strawberry Tree: finishing our tour at the famous bronze statue (which historical notes suggest actually depicts a she-bear).

We wrapped up the evening over a traditional Spanish tapas dinner—where we were pleasantly surprised to be served by a fellow Paraguayan waiter. Energized and rested, we returned to our hotel for a good night’s sleep before our early departure the next morning toward the Eastern Mediterranean.
