Galilee I: Nazareth, Tiberias, and the City of Peter

by Diosnel Herrnsdorf

Another tightly scheduled day awaited us across the landscapes of Galilee. The original itinerary required a spontaneous adjustment for reasons detailed below—a frequent occurrence during pilgrimages that often yields the most rewarding moments.

Nazareth and the Verbum Caro

We began our journey in the city of Nazareth, where Jesus spent most of his hidden life. After visiting a local artisan workshop, we ascended to the monumental Basilica of the Annunciation, built directly over the grotto venerated as the home of the Virgin Mary.

The lower level shelters the Sacred Grotto, featuring an altar inscribed with the profound Latin sentence:
“Verbum Caro Hic Factum Est” (The Word of God was made flesh here).

The upper level opens into a striking modern sanctuary displaying sacred artwork and depictions of the Virgin Mary donated by dioceses worldwide. Along the outer cloister walls, visitors can admire additional mosaics, including an image of Our Lady of Caacupé from Paraguay.

“Standing inside the Grotto of the Annunciation and reading the word ‘Hic’ (here) grounds sacred history into a palpable geographical reality.”

Exiting through the upper plaza, we walked to the Church of Saint Joseph, constructed over the ancient carpentry workshop and home of the Holy Family. As it was Ash Wednesday, a group of pilgrims from Spain was beginning Mass. Joining them was an effortless choice that deeply enriched our morning, even as it reshaped the rest of our schedule.

The Sea of Galilee and Tiberias

The Sea of Galilee (Lake Tiberias) holds a prominent place throughout the Gospels. Following the discovery of a preserved 1st-century fishing vessel—often referred to as the Jesus Boat—wooden replicas modeled after ancient craftsmanship now carry pilgrims across its waters.

Prior to setting sail, we paused at a lakeside restaurant to enjoy the classic “St. Peter’s Fish” (broiled Galilee tilapia), a culinary tradition steeped in biblical reflection.

Capernaum: The Town of Jesus

Our final stop brought us to Capernaum, the primary base of Jesus’ public ministry. The modern sanctuary erected over the house of Saint Peter features an octagonal structure suspended directly above the archaeological excavations.

This historic site reveals layers of human faith: a 1st-century synagogue, an early Christian house-church, and a Byzantine octagonal church. At the center of the modern sanctuary, a glass floor allows visitors to look directly down at the ruins of Peter’s house, where Jesus stayed and performed many of his miracles.
